#Good Construction Practices – Plastering

Plaster has important requirement in fresh and hardened state. Plaster is a thin layer which is applied over masonry surface. It will give smooth, firm surface and increase the building appearance. It provides damp-proof coat on the brick masonry.

Plastering is important to cover the poor workmanship and to protect wall from the atmospheric differential.

Different methods used to plaster different surfaces of concrete such as dense concrete, low-weight concrete and mixed concrete.

Before start plastering, concrete surface has to be free from paint, oil and dust so that plaster can bond properly. The texture of concrete surface has to be rough enough to hold the plaster. To obtain consistency slurry has to be applied over the concrete surface and this mixture is prepared by mixing 1:0.5 ratio of cement and coarse aggregates respectively.

Plaster Coat which is applied over masonry work has to be 10-15 mm thick. If it is applied in only 1 layer than it must be not more than 10 to 15 mm. Curing is done continuously till 7 days.
Concrete surface has to be checked contamination and necessary action to be taken.

Avoid heating the building suddenly hence it increases the temperature.

Remove surface dust from dense concrete surfaces and apply a proprietary bonding agent.
Where possible, use concrete mixes containing flint aggregate for areas to be plastered.
Plastering should be done by firm pressure and once hardened heck for the development of hollowness as the plaster dries out and when heating the building for the first time.
